Kannagi Nagar, Okkiam Thoraipakkam

The inhabitants are people relocated from the coastal areas of Santhome and other Slums of the city, comprising of over 15,000 families with around 1,50,000 inhabitants.

The relocated inhabitants lack basic facilities like education, employment, healthcare and sanitation. The distance from the city being so great coupled with poor transportation facilities caused most of the inhabitants to lose their traditional means of livelihood. This led many to indulge in anti-social activities.

The area is prone to problems like violence against women and children, child trafficking, child abuse & child labour. There is a high prevalence of drug & alcohol abuse and a high level of school drop outs to add up to the problems. The so called stigma of ‘anti-socials’ tagged on the people of this region did a great havoc in not only to providing employment, but also turning in turn to indulge in few anti-social issues for their daily living. Though the government and the non-government organizations volunteered to work for and work with them to cause positive changes in their state of life, yet the results are not satisfactory.

We, as the Salesian Educators strongly believe that life is precious for everyone and it’s the basic right of every individual to live with dignity. We witness and confirm that, early qualitative childhood education leaves an imprint in the child’s mind and it is in fact a significant factor in the mental and social development of children. With this solid plan, in the year 2018, we the Salesian Sisters started our mission to empower the underprivileged children, youth and women of this area through an integrated educational approach to build lives, with them to break the stigma and plan a better dignified life for them
